Food and wine pairings for Autumn 2024, with Master of Wine, Sam Caporn
When the sun is setting sooner and our favourite knitwear is back in rotation, we know that Autumn has arrived.
As a special treat, the Mistress of Wine herself, Sam Caporn, has an autumnal food and wine pairing guide to help us all enjoy this season for all the vivid aromas, colours and tastes it invokes.
From her newly published book, The Wine Flavour Guide, here’s what Autumn 2024 is serving up.
Smooth reds and warm chilli
A hearty and flavourful chilli pairs perfectly with a smooth, fruity red wine. Light-to-medium bodied reds with fruity notes compliment the meaty, spiciness of a classic chilli, balancing the oils with some acidity, too.
Sam loves a straightforward pairing that doesn’t break the bank or take hours from your day, which leaves you ready to enjoy more time with the people and wine you’re sure to love.
Try this fan favourite Valpolicella or, for something a little dearer, this Burgundy Pinot Noir.
Chardonnays and hearty fish
Sam’s next recommendation is a fish pie and full-bodied chardonnay, a cosy combo that complements across flavour, texture, and acidity, with the oils and richness of the fish combining well with the oaky, fruit-forward flavours of chardonnay.
Try it with this eminently enjoyable New South Wales 2021 Chardonnay.
Risotto and fresh reds
Next on the list is a seasonal root veggie risotto; although butternut squash or mushrooms would work just as well. Accompanied by a young, fresh red wine with high acidity, it’s a combination that feels like a genuine treat when executed well.
Give this Aussie Cab Sav a whirl if you’re in the mood for something further flung, or try this light-bodied, French Pinot Noir for something more familiar.
Soup season with fruity viognier
A classic vegetable soup is that most wonderous of things; healthy, heartwarming, and simply delicious. Sam pairs hers with a lightly oaked chardonnay or apricot-forward viognier.
Take a look at these two French viogniers, one priced at roughly £45 and another at a more pocket friendly £16.

And there you have it! Four sensational and simple food and wine pairings for Autumn 2024, courtesy of Master of Wine, Sam Caporn.
Sam’s book, The Wine Flavour Guide: How to Pick the Best Wine for Every Occasion, is available to buy on Amazon, right here, or from your local Waterstones right here, and has already been described as “insightful,” “accessible,” “beautiful,” and “perfect for wine lovers and beginners alike!”
