The Best Chenin Blancs & Rosés to Celebrate Two Special Days This June

In a world where there is a day commemorating and celebrating everything and anything the human mind can conceive, it feels like a genuine treat when significant ones roll around each year.

If you have guessed it already, we’re talking about International Drink Chenin Blanc Day (17 June) and International Rosé Day (24 June). Wine lovers the world over hardly need a reason to kick back and enjoy a glass of their favourite vino, but celebrating heritage and flavour runs deep into the culture of wine making as well as wine drinking.

International Drink Chenin Blanc Day

A celebration that began in South Africa in 2014, International Drink Chenin Blanc Day is an annual championing of the diverse white grape that thrives in various conditions and vinified in a wide range of styles.

While South Africans may have been the first to love it so much that they created a day for it, counterparts in the USA and Japan have since joined in on the act, alongside Fan de Chenin in Frances Loire Valley and Swan Valley wineries in Western Australia like Vino Volta.

Get in on the act yourself with a few fun hashtags associated with the day, like #drinkchenin, #chenanigans, and #cheninfanweek.

The Perfect Celebratory Chenin Blanc Doesn’t Exi-… Wait!

These are our top three choices, in no particular order, for raising a glass on 17 June, 2022:

clos-rougerard-breze

Clos Rougeard Saumur Blanc Breze 2010, Loire, France

One of many notable Chenins from Loire, this fragrant Sumur Blanc is suitably rich, nutty, but not overbearing thanks to the enduring acidity of the grape, with aromas of lemon, pear, and apple.

The Sadie Family Die Ouwingerdreeks ‘Mev. Kirsten’ Chenin Blanc 2016, Stellenbosch, South Africa

The Stellenbosch wine region is celebrated in the South African Western Cape for its immersion and contribution to the country’s wine industry, so we simply couldn’t leave a Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc off this list.

The Sadie Family’s Mev. Kirsten is a rich, yet intense and fresh chenin blanc with a nose of stone fruit, pineapple, yellow apple, baking spice, buttered nuts, and candied ginger.

Domaine Huët 2009 Cuvée Constance 500ml (Vouvray)

Another Loire entrant (they know their stuff), the Domaine Huët 2009 is a sweeter, elegant chenin blanc described as “Vouvray at its magnificent best” by acclaimed wine author, Roger Voss. Count us in.

International Rosé Day

With pink glinted glasses being raised on the fourth Friday of June every year, International Rosé Day has a place in the hearts and mouths of many a wine lover.

While popular winos Wine Folly describe Rosé as a state of mind, the process of making it is surprisingly not as complex as you may think. Red wines will ferment for weeks on red grape skins, soaking up all the textures and tannins red wine drinkers love. With Rosé, it’s only a couple of hours.

With a history spanning over 2,500 years, beginning its journey in Provence, Rosé is here to stay, only becoming more popular as wine producers begin giving more credence and attention to what was once not considered a wine of any real value.

Hip, Hip, Rosé!

Here are three Rosé wines for you to wrap your tastebuds around on 24 June, 2022.

Château Minuty 281 2021

Described as showy with excellent balance, the Château Minuty 281 2021 is a celebratory Rosé if ever we’ve seen one. Certain occasions simply deserve bubbles, and you can enjoy these accompanied by peach, strawberry and melon aromas.

Sosie Wines Rosé of Syrah 2021

One for the oaked chardonnay drinkers. This Rosé is rich and full bodied thanks to oak barrel fermentation. Notes of vanilla pair exquisitely with ripe fruit and red berry aromas. Opulent and an obvious selection for this list.

ruinart-champagne-1729-rose-magnum-chardonnay-luxury-limited-edition-15-l

Maison Ruinart 1729 Limited-Edition Magnum Rosé

This limited-edition magnum release, delicately adorned with Japanese watercolour and gold leaf accents, is part of an artistic collaboration with Sophie Kitching.

With aesthetic appeal to pair its intensely fruity tasting notes, this is a collector’s item you’d be crazy not to empty before displaying the bottle on your mantlepiece. To purchase, you need to email maison1729@moethennessy.com – better get on it.
