5 Films for Wine Enthusiasts (& Novices)

The festive season is well and truly upon us! And with temperatures grazing the freezing mark, what better way to spend these cold, Christmassy nights than with a glass of wine, a pint of popcorn and a carefully selected wine-themed film chosen especially by us?

So, without further ado, it’s time to raise your glass and toast five guaranteed crowd pleasers where vino takes centre stage…

Sideways (2005)

Scoring an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, Sideways is a very funny film about wine – and the love of wine. Based on a novel by the same name, this Oscar-loved comedy tells the tale of two friends, Jack and Miles, whose tour of the vineyards of Santa Barbara leads to misadventures, romances, and lots of good old-fashioned bromance.

“A film that not only demands to be sampled but to be gulped down and savored like the vintage draft that it is.”

Uncorked (2020)

Netflix original, Uncorked follows TN, an aspiring Master Sommelier from Memphis who faces a series of bumps in the road towards pursuing his lifelong dream. The story is loosely based on the life of DLynn Proctor, advanced Sommelier who has been in the industry for over two decades. (His journey to wine stardom also inspired the 2012 film SOMM).

“Uncorked pours an old, old wine into an unexpected new bottle, and while the results are hardly vintage, it still goes down better than two-buck chuck.”

Bottle Shock (2008)

In 1976, the Paris Wine Tasting Competition caused an industry wide uproar when Californian Chateau, Montelena Chardonnay defeated French wine in a blind taste test. This comedy-drama uses the events surrounding ‘The Judgment of Paris’ to dramatise the scandal.

“A film that acknowledges the passion, dedication and commitment of those owner/growers who keep our wine cellars, cupboards and fridges stocked and, to that end, it’s worth a tipple.”

Sour Grapes (2016)

Do you know Rudy Kurniawan? That’s the question this gripping Netflix documentary keeps asking. Told through a series of interviews, real footage and police evidence, this startling expose reveals the dark underbelly of the wine trade. It’s a refreshing blend of humour, full-bodied insights and shocking, stranger-than-fiction revelations…

“Paced like a thriller with aromatic notes of journalistic intrigue, Sour Grapes is a finely balanced blend.”

Wine for the Confused (2004)

Monty Python alumnus John Cleese hosts this light-hearted and hilarious documentary in which he cruises around Santa Barbara and nearby wine country channeling vino knowledge to the viewer. It’s a brilliant introduction to the world of wine for novices and even teaches how to describe the flavours, scents and textures of wines in bog-standard English.

“Very good show to watch…the title says it all.”
